Pt. 1: Meet Linda Grant
Walk in the shoes of equity applicant Linda Grant, a single mom who dreams of owning her own dispensary in East Oakland.
The Equity Program was created after a city analysis found that minorities were unfairly targeted for cannabis related crimes.
To be eligible for the program an applicant must be an Oakland resident, have an annual income at or less than 80 percent of Oakland's Average Median Income adjusted for household size, and have one of the following: lived in a certain police beat for at least ten of the last twenty years* or was arrested after November 5, 1996.
*Police beats: 2X, 2Y, 6X, 7X, 19X, 21X, 21Y, 23X, 26Y, 27X, 27Y, 29X, 30X, 30Y, 31Y, 32X, 33X, 34X, 5X, 8X and 35X.
